Samsung Electronics plans to invest 25 trillion won in 5G, Artificial Intelligence, automotive electronics and biopharmaceuticals over the next three years, to stay ahead of rivals and foster new growth engines. Samsung suggests that 5G will create fresh opportunities in autonomous driving, IoT devices and robotics.

To help unlock the potential of artificial intelligence, it’s increasing the number of top-level AI researchers to 1,000 globally.

It’s also stepping up investment in its traditional semiconductor business, and opening its venture incubation program to both external and internal startup projects. Total investments will reach 180 trillion won (US$160 billion), the bulk of which will be spent in Korea.

Manufacturing hubs in Pyeongtaek will be expanded, while its internal venture incubation program, C-Lab, introduced in 2012, expects to support up to 500 external start-up projects, to encourage innovations.

It will also plough more money into displays “to develop high-value, differentiated products amid rising competition in the industry.”

In its second quarter financial results the company posted a 4 per cent drop in consolidated quarterly revenue, but declared quarterly operating profit up 6 percent. In its Display Business, the Company reports weak demand for flexible OLED panels falling LCD panel prices. However earnings from its TV business are expected to improve thanks to innovations like QLED and 8K TVs.
