Samsung's innovative Cinema LED screen will make its European commercial debut in Zurich. Swiss entrepreneur, and owner of Arena Cinemas, Edi Stöckli is behind the install. Stöckli’s cinema complex Arena Sihlcity will be home to the technology.
The display, an alternative to traditional cinema projection, features 24 million LEDs in a 10.2m (w) x 5.4m (h) configuration, and promises extreme colour brilliance and luminosity. it’s also 3D compatible.
Cinema LED changes the aesthetics of cinema design, not least because it no longer needs to accommodate projection. "We have removed the complete furnishings, implemented an innovative seating concept and consequently are providing the audience with the ultimate cinematic experience," says Stöckli.
The screen consists of 96 individual modules, which can be replaced individually. High-precision calibration produces a smooth, seamless image. The theatre itself can be perfectly dark, as there are no reflections from the projected image.
The format is 4K (4096 x 2160) HDR and can present both flat and ‘Scope movies. Samsung says that there are no visible letterbox bars. The display is 10 times brighter than conventional projectors, boasting a luminous intensity of up to 146 foot-lamberts (or 500 nits). Samsung’s Cinema LED technology is compliant with the DCI specification.
The Cinema LED screen is partnered with a 'Sculpted Surround' audio system created by JBL and Harman.
Exhibitors can use the screen not just for movie presentations, but also advertising, presentations and games, opening the door to new revenue opportunities. It’s also designed for 24/7 operation.
"Samsung always tries to go the hilt and advance technological progress to make life easier for people and enrich their lives,” says Daniel Périsset, Head of Samsung Business for Samsung Switzerland. “We have once again succeeded in doing this with the new LED Cinema Screen. We are already looking forward to the use of the screens in other movie theaters."
