Dolby and The Walt Disney Studios have confirmed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is getting a Dolby Cinema release. The version, made for Dolby Vision projection with Dolby Atmos audio, will be screened in 50 theatres around the globe when the blockbuster launches in December.

Gareth Edwards is directing this first Star Wars stand-alone film, a prequel in which our heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. The movie stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with its attention to every detail from cinematography and visual effects to musical score, deserves to be seen in the cinema with the best sound and image capabilities available,” enthuses Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema Business Group, Dolby. “When audiences go to see this movie in Dolby Cinema locations around the world, they will be participating in something special—an experience that only Dolby can deliver.”

Dolby Cinema is built around the Dolby Vision laser projection system, which uses state-of-the-art optics and image processing to deliver HDR with enhanced colour and a contrast ratio that eclipses lamp-based 4K projectors. Dolby Atmos sound adds to the sense of Next generation immersion.

“Like all Star Wars movies, Rogue One is a truly cinematic event, and the Dolby Cinema experience will immerse audiences deeper into the story,” adds Lynwen Brennan, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Lucasfilm. “The Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies beautifully showcase this amazing galaxy, accentuating the intense black of space, the colorful worlds, the dynamic sound effects and epic score – all the hallmarks of a Star Wars film that we can’t wait to share with audiences in Rogue One.”

To date, around 60 titles have been released or announced in Dolby Vision. At present there is no commercial Dolby Cinema in the UK, however Dolby Europe’s London HQ has a fully equipped and recently refurbished Dolby Cinema auditorium. Inside CI was recently invited to take a closer look at the technology, with a screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. With an ability to deliver perfect black, immense contrast and a wide colour palette, the technology is setting the  standard in next generation theatre projection. The implementation of Dolby Atmos in the venue is similarly outstanding.
