Could LG’s rollable OLED screen be the next step in the evolution of home entertainment? Unveiled at CES 2019, the LG Signature OLED TV R (aka 65R9), introduces the most radical change in form factor since TVs went 16:9.

Taking advantage of the inherent flexibility of the OLED panel, the new design opens the door to ever larger displays in the home, as well as new aspect ratios and functionality.

The roll-up screen rises from a cabinet at the touch of a button. The cabinet itself doubles as a 100w 4.2 Dolby Atmos sound system; the speaker array is hidden behind Kvadrat cloth, a designer complement to the brushed aluminium casing.

The 65R9 offers three different viewing options: Full View, Line View and Zero View. Unlike the Full View 16:9 screen, Line view shows only a sliver of panel and is used for music playback, clock/weather, mood, and photo frame displays. A Zero view mode, with screen fully retracted, allows the device to function as a sound system. Perhaps disappointingly, there’s no 21:9 viewing mode for home cinema.

There’s no compromise on TV performance. The set itself uses LG’s second generation α (Alpha) 9 intelligent processor, and has Amazon Alexa, as well as Google Assistant support. It’s also compatible with Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. With support for AirPlay 2, users can play videos from iTunes and other video apps, music, photos and directly from Apple devices.

There’s no price announced yet for this remarkable rollable, but the price tag will doubtless be suitably premium when it goes on sale later this year.
