Panasonic has confirmed a firmware deployment for its 2018 HDR TVs that ernables HDR10+ dynamic metadata support. Along with Samsung and 20th Century Fox, Panasonic is an early advocate for the standard.

An upgraded version of the base HDR10 standard, HDR10+ adds dynamic metadata to each frame. This HDR data, which covers peak luminance level and stability, white point tracking performance and color gamut coverage, enables compatible chipsets to more accurate reflect HDR images. As yet, HDR10+ has had little impact while key rival Dolby Vision gains traction, particularly with streaming suppliers, but this firmware release is a key building block.

“Panasonic is happy to announce that through the deployment of a firmware update, the majority of our 2018 4K models are now HDR10+ certified meaning that our viewers will be able to enjoy content even closer to the intentions of the filmmakers,” said Toshiharu Tsutsui, Director of Panasonic’s TV Business Division.

Hardware certification is now being handled by Authorized Testing Centers (ATC) such as Allion and TTA. Adopter categories include UHD Blu-ray player manufacturers, OTT set-top box manufacturers or service, display manufacturers, SoC vendors, content companies, tool vendors, etc.

“We’re encouraged by the interest of early adopters and an expanded HDR10+ ecosystem that will improve the viewing experiences for all audiences,” says Danny Kaye, Executive Vice President of 20th Century Fox and Managing Director of the Fox Innovation Lab.

20th Century Fox has committed to incorporating HDR10+ in its upcoming new release slate. Titles have yet to be announced.
