AV and Hi-Fi specialist Onkyo has confirmed a DTS:X firmware upgrade for two incoming AV receivers. The TX-NR646 and TX-NR747 (pictured above) will feature codec support for Dolby Atmos out of the box, with DTS:X support due later this year, delivered in a 5.1.2 channel  configuration. At present no studios have committed to DTS:X software but content is expected before the end of the year. As with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X supports a height soundtrack component, but purports to be more adaptable in terms of speaker positioning.

DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, a spatial re-mapping technology which promises an immersive soundfield for a wide variety of source content, including standard DTS surround mixes and PCM streams. “We’re confident that DTS:X represents the most convenient and effective way for movie lovers to experience immersive multi-dimensional sound,” enthuses DTS EVP and chief marketing officer Kevin Doohan.

The TX-NR646 is rated at 160W per channel while the THX select 2 TX-NR747 claims 175W. Both models utilise dual 32-bit DSP engines and a new 384 kHz/32-bit AK4458 DAC from Asahi-Kasei. The specification includes eight 4K/60 Hz-ready HDMI 2.0a inputs and two multi-zone outputs, with dedicated HDCP 2.2-compliant terminals for 4K streaming and Ultra HD Blu-ray. The models have integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with AirPlay. High res audio support includes 192/24 FLAC and DSD 5.6 MHz. They retail for £549 and £849 respectively.
