Upcoming Tom Cruise actioner Mission Impossible Rogue Nation will be the first Paramount release to include a Dolby Cinema version. The new theatrical format includes an HDR (High Dynamic Range), wide colour gamut iteration of the movie with Dolby Atmos sound mix. Actually getting to see it though could be a Mission Impossible for cinema-goers, as there are currently only around ten Dolby Cinema equipped auditoriums worldwide. The company suggests that around 100 cinemas will be equipped before the end of the year.

The high profile release follows on from Disney’s Tomorrowland, which was the first Dolby Cinema title (write that down, pub quiz question), Warner’s San Andreas and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out (pictured below).

Europe now has two Dolby Cinema venues, following the opening of JT Hilversum in the Netherlands, which joins JT Eindhoven. Speaking at the opening, Doug Darrow, SVPp of Dolby's Cinema Business Group, declared: “Audiences will be captivated by the unprecedented imagery and unparalleled sound that will transport them into the story in a unique and powerful way.”

3D audio format Dolby Atmos also continues to gain studio traction. At CineEurope 2015, held recently in Barcelona, Dolby confirmed a slate of new theatrical releases in the format, including Everest (Universal), Roger Waters The Wall (Picturehouse), Legend (Studio Canal), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Sicario (both Lionsgate). Currently more than 1,000 screens worldwide have installed (or plan to install) Atmos sound systems.

Central to the take up is the brand’s CP850 Dolby Atmos Cinema Processor family, which offers exhibitors a choice of cinema audio solutions. The CP850 Base will play back Dolby Surround 7.1 and 5.1 formats, as well as render select Dolby Atmos titles to a Dolby Surround 7.1 configuration. The CP850 Base features the same equalisation and feature set as the Full CP850 iteration, but does not require the Dolby Atmos Commissioning Service. The number of films with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack now tops 275.

"The availability of Dolby Atmos enabled Blu-rays is also increasing," Dolby’s Abigail Holdaway told Inside CI at a screening of Sean Penn’s The Gunman. The film, released this week on Blu-ray, features a highly energetic sound mix with concussive image placement, which should make it a firm system demo favourite.
