Meridian Audio has introduced the DSW600, a slimline Digital Active in-wall subwoofer for home theatre installations.

The DSW600 features a 600W Class-D amplifier that uses the brand’s proprietary Digital Signal Processing and Enhanced Bass Alignment technologies. With a low output impedance and a low-profile drive-unit designed to displace large volumes of air, it can deliver prodigious bass down to 24Hz, says the company.

On-board DSP provides thermal and dynamic bass protection, to cope with high level playback or use over prolonged periods of time. Meridian Enhanced Bass Alignment uses two different techniques to time-align differing frequencies, for audibly improved bass and added clarity when the subwoofer is combined with other Meridian loudspeakers.

Proprietary bass protection is employed to ensure the subwoofer isn’t damaged from over-excursion, handled invisibly in the digital domain. This powerful electronics pack is designed to be installed in the wall with the subwoofer, reducing both heat and space required in the rack.

The DSP also supports partnering with any Meridian Architectural Loudspeaker to provide full-range performance from a two-box in-wall solution. When used in this configuration, the DSW600 gives the DSP320.2, DSP520.2, DSP640.2 or DSP750 bass extension down to 24Hz.

In addition, the DSW600 can augment the bass from other loudspeakers in both two-channel and surround-sound systems, creating full range LCR or surround channels. The DSW600 can be assigned to handle the dedicated LFE channel, or used in multiples to create more complex room modes and smoother bass in more seats.

Mounting depth is shallow at less than 100mm, offering flexibility with installations. It can reside either behind acoustically transparent fabrics and screens, or built into plastered or solid walls.

The enclosure uses a sealed acoustic cabinet made from birch plywood, as used on Meridian floorstanding loudspeakers, paired with heavy internal bracing. The removable grille and frame are secured using anti-vibration fixings and built-in amplification frees up more vital space in the rack

Installers can use built-in music and movie modes to tailor bass performance depending on content.

“The new DSW600 is a revolutionary product designed to handle bass-heavy music and movie soundtracks, delivering incredible, immersive audio with ease,” says Barry Sheldrick, Meridian’s Director of Sales. “It’s the ideal solution for our dealers to create a complete home cinema setup for their clients that really is a cut above the rest.”
