McIntosh is giving old school radio a modern makeover with its new MR89 AM/FM tuner. The new stereo receiver benefits from a wealth of sonic advancements, says the brand, including adjustments to sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, harmonic distortion, channel selectivity and stereo separation.

This time around, those famous McIntosh power meters show the signal level being delivered from the analogue outputs of each channel, so users can get a good indication of the MR89’s quality stereo separation.

Styling is classic McIntosh, with a black-glass front panel, and brushed-aluminium end-caps. Connectivity includes balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs, plus digital coaxial and optical outputs.

Features include upgraded stereo blending, a ‘Softmute’ feature to reduce the audio output of low-quality station inputs, and a Highcut function to reduce high-frequency audio content.

Proprietary McIntosh radio frequency (RF) circuitry has been designed to receive strong FM signals from available local stations and tune out noise from weaker FM signals.

The MR89 retails for £6,800. Distribution is via Fine Sounds UK.
