The UK government is stepping up support for CES and those UK tech companies who wish to attend, says Dr Michael Short (pictured above), Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department for International Trade. Speaking at a CTA (Consumer Technology Association) briefing in London yesterday, Dr Short also confirmed that Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox will attend the Las Vegas show in January, to host a UK reception and take part in meet and greet activities.

Plans include a directory of exhibitors and stand holders of UK origin. There will also be a video wall supporting UK exhibitors.

“There are only so many events that are world class, and CES is one of them. I went this January and observed that the UK could do a bit better,” admitted Short.

In 2017, CES chief Gary Shapiro publicly blasted the UK government, declaring its lack of support for UK tech start ups a source of embarrassment.

One key reason the UK government has growing interest in CES is automotive. The show has evolved into a significant platform for new automotive technologies.

Prime minister Theresa May recently announced a £106m funding boost to drive research and development in new battery and hydrogen technologies, as part of its Road to Zero Strategy for cars and vans.

“One of the reasons we’re stepping up our support is that we’ve seen as a department that there is much more there than just consumer electronics,” says Short. “We will have a full automotive delegation, and we’ll hold a private reception for the automotive supply chain, those involved in electronics, voice assistance and driverless, electric cars.”
