CES 2018  OLED  4K  8K

Evidence that the display industry is slowly moving to viable 8K displays, comes in the form of an 8K OLED panel which LG will unveil at CES next week. With a resolution of 7680 x 4320, 8K offers four times the pixel density of 4K, and is expected to gain a level of commercial traction by 2020. LG Display will display an 88-inch panel 88in 8K OLED panel on its Las Vegas booth.

An inevitable consequence of smaller pixels is a general loss of brightness. LG says OLED is less susceptible to this than LED LCDs, although with LCD screens offering significantly higher brightness than OLED, there will probably be a levelling in potential performance.

What is the model number of the OLED 8K panel? That’s yet to be revealed, along with any nominal pricing information. Given that a smaller 77-inch 4K OLED currently sells for around £20,000, you can probably draw your own conclusions about retail potential.

What is clear though is that 8K will increasingly become a focus of attention for all the major TV brands, and it’s certain not to be the only 8K development to emerge from this year’s CES expo.
