LG is opening up its webOS TV smart platform to other manufacturers, adopting a strategy that will see it move from proprietary interface to licensed standard.
First introduced in 2014, LG’s webOS ecosystem brings together an array of features, including voice search and control, powerful AI algorithms and intuitive connectivity. It’s also home to rich content options, including access to Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, sports streaming service DAZN and LG’s own IP-delivered linear channels.
Licensees of webOS TV will have access to its UX design, along with its full feature set. They’ll also adopt the Magic Motion remote controller.
Over 20 TV manufacturers from around the world have already committed to the webOS partnership, including established names like RCA, Ayonz and Konka. More partners are expected to join in the future, says LG. The webOS ecosystem is supported by technology partners including Realtek, Nuance, Gracenote, CEVA and Universal Electronics.
LG says that by expanding its reach beyond TV manufacturing to encompass webOS TV software platform development and adoption by other TV brands, it has the potential to ‘reshape the TV business for both technology and content providers,’ and in the process elevate its prominence in the global home entertainment market.
Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company, said: “The webOS platform is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to access millions of hours of movies and TV shows. By welcoming other manufacturers to join the webOS TV ecosystem, we are embarking on a new path that allows many new TV owners to experience the same great UX and features that are available on LG TVs. We look forward to bringing these new customers into the incredible world of webOS TV.”
