LG will demonstrate OLED TVs running Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) technology, along with HDR10 and DolbyVision at this year’s IFA technology expo. The HLG demonstrations will be held in partnership with the ASTRA satellite network and the BBC. Hybrid Log Gamma technology has been jointly developed by the BCC and NHK as a broadcast technology solution for HDR.

The standard allows a single distribution bitstream to be used by broadcasters which can be decoded by both HDR receivers and legacy non-HDR receivers. This simplifies the broadcast chain, particularly when it comes to the transmission of live HDR content such as sports. There will also be test transmissions of HDR HGL encoded content at high frame rates, up to 100/120 frames per second. The BBC and the European Broadcasting Union will demonstrate HFR HLG content compatible with both MPEG DASH and DVB-T2 transmission systems.

“With unprecedented technological flexibility, LG OLED TVs offer the most advanced HDR capabilities on the market today as well as into the future,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “Future HDR technology will allow a wider range of consumers to experience rich HDR content regardless of the format employed.”

IFA Berlin runs September 2 -7 2016.
