LG has started taking pre-orders for its first 8K OLED TV, the 88-inch 88Z9, this week in South Korea. Priced at $29,999, the set will make its way to North America and Europe in the third quarter of the year.

The 8k bandwagon is barely rolling, but that hasn’t dissuaded the major TV manufacturers from making significant investments into panel technology. Both Samsung and Sony have launched 8k LED LCD screens. The LG offering is twice the price of Sony’s 85-inch 8k offering.

The 7680 x 4320 resolution 88Z9 is the brand’s largest consumer OLED proposition. It utilises the company’s second- generation Alpha 9 Gen 2 8K intelligent processor, which employs deep learning algorithms to enhance sound and vision. Features include advanced 8K upscaling with improved noise reduction to 6-steps from the 4k’s Alpha 9’s 4-steps. The processor also analyses ambient conditions to optimise screen brightness.

The LG 88Z9 can also up-mix two-channel audio to create a virtual 5.1 surround soundstage. Deep learning techniques analyse source content to produce enhanced sound effects in movies, deeper bass and clearer commentary at sports event.

Dolby Atmos decoding is standard. The TV supports HDMI 2.1, for 4320/60p content, as well as automatic low latency mode (ALLM), variable refresh rate (VRR) and enhanced audio return channel (eARC).

In some markets the LG 8K OLED TV will have Google Assistant built-in.

“Being the first to market with the world’s first and largest 8k OLED TV shows our commitment to leading the ultra-premium TV segment and delivering the ultimate viewing experience,” says Brian Kwon, president of LG Mobile Communications and Home Entertainment companies. “We will continue to introduce state-of-art TV technologies that push the boundaries of what’s possible in home entertainment.”
