The signal distribution wizards at HDanywhere have come up with a simple, inexpensive way to send IR control commands over HDMI.

The IR Over HDMI Injector Kit comprises two HDMI TX/RX adaptors which plug into the display and source; a breakout IR receiver/transmitter then allows commands to routed down the existing cable run. Just the ticket when line of sight IR repeaters won't work.

Rather ingeniously, the system works by hijacking the HDMI CEC command pathway. CEC is the universal system control protocol, often renamed by different brands as BRAVIA Link (Sony), VIERA Link (Panasonic) etc, which allows one remote to control several linked HDMI products. A switch allows users to toggle between IR injection and standard CEC channel use.

Installation takes just a few minutes. Simply connect the transmitting unit directly into the TV's HDMI socket, and then reconnect the TV's HDMI cable into the transmitting unit's female HDMI socket. The transmitting unit has a port that accepts the included IR sensor, which will receive any and all brands of remote IR control. The sensor is placed somewhere near the TV where the remote control is normally aimed.

The receiver then plugs directly into the video source's HDMI socket. It has a port for the included IR emitter. The system works even when the HDMI cable is routed through splitters, boosters and switches or extended via Cat5.

The HDanywhere IR Over HDMI Injector Kit sells for a trifling £24.99.

Fantastic piece of kit, the real solution to IR control of equipment hidden from view. Using now of just about every hidden installation. Only slight improvement would be for 1 end to be a right angled adaptor, for behind wall mounted TVs.
