Focal has unveiled a new generation of Grand Utopia loudspeaker at Munich High End. The new models, the Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo, include a feast of new technologies developed by Focal over the past decade.
TMD (Tuned Mass Damping) suspension and NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit) are said to bring more refinement to the mid-range; the former reducing distortion, and the latter negating harmonic and intermodulation distortion.
The structure of the loudspeaker has also been strengthened, through the use of an MRR (Machined Reinforcement Rings) system around the speaker drivers. This is composed of solid aluminium parts machined in the mass, positioned between the front speaker and the speaker driver basket. This sandwich is used for the 6- and 11-inch drivers of the Stella Utopia EM Evo, and the 6-inch speaker drivers of the Grande Utopia EM Evo. The 13-inch (Stella Utopia EM Evo) and 15-inch woofers (Grande Utopia EM Evo) also use segments of solid aluminium.
And of course the new Grand Utopia look spectacular. The cabinet is fully lacquered, with the front and sides in one single colour. The EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo have finishes inspired by automotive production. Diablo Utopia, Viva Utopia and the subs Utopia EM feature the audio performance of their predecessors, albeit with new cosmetic finishes: Metallic Blue, Ash Grey and British Racing Green, in addition to Black Lacquer and Carrara White.
The Focal Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo will retail for £159,999 per pair and £89,999 per pair, respectively.
