Advanced multi-channel surround sound has gained an unlikely ally in the shape of grizzled action hero Sylvester Stallone. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has confirmed that his box office hit The Expendables 2 will be the first Blu-ray to feature an 11.1 DTS Neo:X soundtrack.

This DTS release capitalises on the currently roll-out of next-generation theatrical sound formats, such as Dolby Atmos and Auro 11.1 that up the ante in terms of sound design and execution. Increasingly, high profile films are being mixed to accommodate these systems. Star Trek into Darkness and The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey are just two high profile titles to be released with Dolby Atmos soundtracks for equipped theatres.

When played back on an AV receiver with DTS Neo:X decoding and the appropriate number of speakers The Expendables 2 will deliver a higher, wider surround experience than has been commercially available on disc before. It's exactly the kind of demo experience that will encourage home cinema fans to upgrade their existing systems or invest in future-proof new installs. Miguel Casillas, Lionsgate SVP promises "Hardcore audiophiles and casual fans alike will be amazed at the dynamic and immersive experience of DTS' Neo:X 11.1 audio. It's the ultimate audio playback environment for the home theatre enthusiast and a perfect match for the incredible audio design of The Expendables 2."

DTS Neo:X technology supports front-height speakers which can be exploited to deliver discrete vertical effects and ambient sounds, as well as wide speakers which expand the front soundstage to give smoother, more pronounced panning and tracking. The sheer number of physical speakers required makes this technology a natural for in- and -on wall enclosures.

Molly Kronberg, vice president of digital media at DTS says "the adoption of Neo:X on Blu-ray discs and high-end AVRs builds upon DTS' success in delivering an immersive cinematic audio experience to consumers at home. Studios and AVR manufacturers alike are showing increased interest in our advanced Neo:X processing and we are excited that The Expendables 2 is the first major title to take advantage of the technology's stimulating multi-dimensional aural capabilities, which dramatically complement the movie's high-impact action scenes."

DTS Neo:X uses a single algorithm to deliver from stereo to 11.1; making it fully compatible with 7.1 and 5.1 systems. DTS says it is currently in discussions with studios and independent filmmakers to release additional titles with Neo:X optimised soundtracks.
