Even Spidey can’t save Sony’s 4K Blu-ray launch titles

There’s a golden rule when launching a new format: never put your best titles out early. Sony Pictures certainly seems to have taken that to heart with its first slate of 4K Ultra HD releases. The initial collection comprises the Amazing Spider-Man 2, Salt, Hancock, Chappie, Pineapple Express and The Smurfs 2. Perhaps the only surprise is that Sony studio duds Annie and The Interview haven’t also made the cut. The collection will join the Fox 4K disc launch catalogue, which looks somewhat more interesting: Exodus: Gods and Kings, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Fantastic Four, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Life of Pi, The Maze Runner and Wild.

As yet, Sony has made no announcement about its hardware plans, although insiders have repeatedly told Inside CI that a UHD player is on the cards. Of course, what the format will need to gain traction is both high profile catalogue releases and day and date releases with key titles. As yet, that seems some way off.

Hollywood major Lionsgate, responsible for The Hunger games franchise, is reportedly remastering its top 100 films for UHD broadcast and packaged media release. The world looks likely to get its first real look at Ultra HD Blu-ray disc at the International CES in January.
