Positioned as a neat, wall-mountable alternative to long cable runs, the DVDO Air is a wireless HD connection system which can be used between any HD source and display.
We've seen a flood of wireless HD transmitters come to market over the past 12 months, but they often entail a compromise of two (usually on the audio front) and are generally intended for multi-room use. This DVDO solution is different. It uses WiHD technology, which operates in the 60GHz band and promises full HDMI v1.4a compliance, from 1080p 3D through to 7.1 multichannel PCM audio. It's not a multi-room solution though. WirelessHD is a line-of-site technology, although it uses a beam forming technique to sidestep this limitation to make shorter connections below 10m. For installers, this means the small, cylindrical receiver unit can be mounted behind a TV, using the bracket supplied. DVDO Air can operate in rooms up to 30m in length, when LOS is possible. Of course, working within the Extremely High Frequency band also moves the system away from any possible interference from Wi-Fi or mobile networks.
Installation involves no more than connecting the source and display to the transmitter and receiver. Lag is quotes at just 2ms. The DVDO Air is distributed in the UK by Karma AV, and has a retail price of £350. Shipping begins in July.
