Disney+ has amassed 50 million paid subscribers globally just five months after its US launch, the House of Mouse has announced.
“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” declared Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International. “Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+.”
Over the past two weeks, the Disney+ service landed in eight Western European countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland, to challenge Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Most recently it became available in India, where it’s partnered with the existing Hotstar service, which alone delivered eight million paid subscribers.
The streaming service offers TV and movie content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Fox.
