Home automation giant Crestron is the latest smart home vendor to partner with Amazon, to provide voice control of Crestron home systems using the Amazon Echo Alexa platform.

Crestron installers will be able to use the Alexa Voice Service to build voice controlled scenes and lifestyle settings. Integration isn’t limited to lighting control and temperature adjustment, says the brand.

“Crestron customers expect a truly integrated home technology experience,” said John Clancy, VP of Residential Systems at Crestron. “We’ve been collaborating very closely with Amazon Alexa engineers to make sure we offer an uncompromising voice control experience that is every bit as seamless and satisfying as tapping a button on a Crestron touch screen, remote control, or designer keypad. You can ask Alexa to set the mood for dinner, or to play a movie in the bedroom, or let her know it’s too cold in the bathroom. Just say the word and your Crestron system responds immediately.”

Crestron installers can define and deploy Amazon Alexa skills using new software modules that interface with both the Smart Home Skill API and the Alexa Skills Kit SDK. These modules will work with both Crestron 3-Series processors (available from October ) and Crestron Pyng (compatibility coming soon).

Crestron’s involvement is perhaps indicative of the impact the Amazon Echo ecosystem is expected to have on the nacent smart home market. Amazon Echo launches September 28 in the UK. For more on how Crestron and Amazon work together click here.
