IMAX Corp has signed a deal with Cineworld to install IMAX laser screens in 55 more locations across Europe and the US. IMAX with Laser systems will be installed in 26 new IMAX theatres, while 29 existing sites will be upgraded. The theatres are expected to be rolled out between 2018 and 2022.

The next-generation 4K laser projection system features a new optical engine and raft of proprietary technologies for increased resolution, brighter images and better contrast. The system is complemented by 12-channel sound, with new side and overhead channels that promise greater dynamic range and immersion.

Mooky Greidinger, CEO of Cineworld Group PLC, says that IMAX with Laser represents “the best blockbuster moviegoing experience and will be our leading premium offering.”The deployment is being hailed as the company’s most advanced commercial projection system to date.

Additionally, Cineworld and its Regal Entertainment Group subsidiary will be undertaking a complete renovation of all 55 locations. These movie-going enhancements will include luxury rocker seating, redesigned entryways and updated in-theatre branding. Cineworld operates in the US, the UK, Ireland, Poland, Romania, Israel, Hungary, Czech, Bulgaria and Slovakia.

“For over 20 years, Cineworld has been a major proponent of The IMAX Experience and its ability to attract and immerse audiences. says IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “In addition to the economics of the new laser system remaining attractive and coming with 12-year lease extensions, we believe this powerful new product will over time help ensure that IMAX remains the premium cinematic experience of choice among moviegoers, studios, filmmakers and theatre partners alike.”

There are currently agreements to install 150 IMAX with Laser systems worldwide.
