Sony has introduced a new entry-level UHD Blu-ray player. The UBP-X500 is a compact design, just 32cm wide, and spins 4K UHD discs and regular Blu-rays. The player will also upscale DVDs to 2160/60. Unlike Sony’s UBP-X800, HDR support is limited to standard HDR10.

The UBP-X500 isn’t just about video though. In addition to CD, it’s SACD compatible and has comprehensive file playback support, including DSD, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AAC, and MP3. Video file support covers Mpeg 2, Mpeg 4, Xvid and WMV.

Connections are basic - just a single HDMI out, plus Ethernet and USB. The UBP-X500 sells for £200.
