BT is to introduce Dolby Atmos sound to its UHD sports coverage, as part of a major platform overhaul. In an announcement, the broadcaster has also confirmed a new “image-rich user experience with easy access to channels and on demand content, and a new BT TV App.” Subscribers will be able to manage recordings and stream live and on demand programmes on mobile devices.

BT will start Dolby Atmos broadcasts for BT Sport Ultra HD customers in January. It becomes the first UK broadcaster to offer the immersive 3D sound format. While BT's 4K channel viewship is relatively low, it is likely to reignite a features rivalry with Sky and VirginMedia.

BT will also start showing boxing on Saturday nights from early 2017, in a new partnership with BoxNation. At least 20 Saturday night events, including World, European, British and Commonwealth title fights promoted by Frank Warren, will be shown on BT Sport channels.

The revamped YouView platform promises to make it easier for customers to navigate. This new usability will be carried through to the launch of new BT TV App next summer.

Delia Bushell, managing director of BT TV and BT Sport, said: “BT’s mission has always been to provide a high quality, premium TV service at prices that give unbeatable value to UK consumers. We will keep driving the pace of innovation in content, broadcasting and our customers’ experience.
