Arcam is rolling out an Auro-3D firmware update for its latest generation of AV receivers. The AVR10, AVR20, AVR30 and AV40 AV processor are all beneficiaries.

The receivers can now implement Auro-3D for AVR, which combines the Auro-Codec decoder and Auro-Matic up-mixer, and requires an Auro-3D configured speaker array. Auro-3D capable speaker formations do not require ceiling speakers, instead there’s a second vertical stereo field above the existing surround layer. The immersive audio format can be configured in systems ranging from Auro 9.1 to 13.1.

Rudy Van Duppen, CEO of Auro Technologies, describes the announcement as “a significant milestone.”

“We’re very pleased to have Auro-3D certified on our products allowing the end-user greater choice and flexibility,” adds Nick Clarke, Senior Director, Global Engineering Luxury Audio. “It’s been a really fun experience working with the Auro-3D team to bring this partnership to life and I’m excited by the possibilities it brings to the experience of Arcamusers, both now and in the future.”

While native Auro-3D content is noticeable only be its absence, the technology also works with ‘non-Auro’ content. The Auro-Matic up-mixer can convert any content sources into the format, be it mono, stereo, or surround.
