Arcam has today announced the AVR5, it’s new entry-level (if you can consider £1,999 entry-level) AV receiver. It resides below the AVR10, AVR20, and the range-topping G Class AVR30, and will be available later this year.

There’s native decoding for 12 channels of Dolby Atmos and DTS-X, and support a 7.1.4 speaker configuration. It is however only a seven channel amplifier design, so you’ll need to add additional power amps to achieve this.

On the plus side, its seven Class AB amplification channels, driven by a custom in-house designed linear supply, are said to be fully capable of sustaining 1.5KW of total power consumption.

HDMI support covers Dolby Vision and HLG, with 4k HDR passthrough, and eARC . However, if you want or need HDMI v2.1 for 8k or High Frame Rate video sources, you’ll need to book it in for a board upgrade.

Beneath the hood are ESS ES9026PRO DACs (as used in the AVR30), reportedly maximised for a low noise performance. AVR5 supports Apple AirPlay 2, Bluetooth aptX HD, has Google Chromecast built-in, and offers Spotify Connect.

The 2021-updated Harman MusicLife UPnP app enables playback and control of the AVR5 on Android and iOS, and facilitates music streaming, and podcast listening. The new ARCAM also supports MQA, good news for TIDAL HiFi subscribers, and its Roon Ready. The AVR5 can also form part of a Roon-driven multi-room system.

The AVR5 offers installers a Dirac Live room correction software option; Arcam offers the AVR5 for Dirac Live but doesn't activate the paid-for software, leaving the option up to the customer.
