Dolby Atmos audio is coming to iTunes. Apple used its WWDC keynote to confirm that tvOS 12, the operating system behind Apple TV, will offer Dolby Atmos audio on 4K HDR movies, from this autumn. With its Fall OS update, iTunes will begin offering Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos films to buy or rent. Users that have bought titles in iTunes will automatically receive an upgrade to Dolby Atmos, where the soundmix is available, at no extra cost.

The Atmos stream will be delivered via Dolby Digital Plus, as is the case with all other no disc delivered applications of the format (BT TV, Sky Q). Blu-ray delivers Dolby Atmos within a TrueHD stream.

The announcement further cements Dolby Atmos as the default object-based audio standard. In addition to Blu-ray, it has been adopted by broadcasters for packaged and live content, as well as Netflix. Rival Amazon Prime does not yet offer any 3D audio streams. Rakuten TV recently announced that it would offers Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision through its streaming TV app, initially only on compatible LG TVs.

Apple TV supports control via Crestron, Control4 and Savant, including the use of Siri for voice search and control.
