Invisible loudspeaker specialist Amina Sound has introduced a new generation of fully concealed loudspeakers; the Edge5 and Edge7. Ready to wow visitors at its ISE stand (H1N018), the Edge7 has a sensitivity of 93dB, 1W/1m.

The Edge series, with their white front and burgundy back, have a tapered perimeter, that use a dry-wall /drylining installation approach for new build or retrofit applications to an invisible sound source for installation within walls or ceilings.

“The appeal of an invisibly reproduced sound-stage is increasingly attracting the attention of designers, architects and clients” commented Amina Managing Director, Richard Newlove “allowing the total preservation of the interior aesthetic whilst accessing the benefits of audiophile reproduction for music or cinema in the home or the commercial setting.”

The key element in developing any diffuse source, wide frequency range, flat panel loudspeaker, is dominated by the choice of material used in the active flat panel surface of the loudspeaker. This forms the musical sound board at the heart of Amina’s invisible speaker products and is critical in determining its efficiency and quality of audio output. Put simply, the panel has to be stiff and light enough to be acoustically efficient, yet it also has to have enough damping to allow it to reproduce extended low frequency energy. At the same time the material must have a hardness to it, otherwise high frequency reproduction will suffer.

Amina’s new Edge series feature a new front panel material developed over the last four years in collaboration with a European composite specialist. The panel uses a high performance glass filled core making it stiff, light and damped which is perfect for high fidelity sound production.

Newlove added “the material also has excellent fire retardant and low smoke and fume properties which is becoming an increasingly important requirement within the built environment’.

To be compatible with dry-wall techniques, it is imperative that the perimeter edge of the panel has to be shaped and tapered to allow joint tape and filler to be used in the same way as drywall gypsum has a tapered edge. This gracious form factor of the Amina Edge provides plenty of depth to place joint tape around the boundary without any danger of ‘sanding’ joint filler away to expose the scrim. Its rounded corners allow smooth application of drywall compound avoiding a sharp change in direction of the dry-wall blade.

There are currently two products in the Amina Edge product range: the Edge7 and the entry level Edge5.

The Amina Edge7 is capable of handling 75W of continuous power. That’s a massive peak power handling of 150W which combined with 93dB 1W/1m efficiency provides a truly exceptional listening experience with zero visual intrusion. Maximum achievable peak Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is just under 115dB at 1m. Able to reproduce a 45Hz at the low end, the Edge7 works at its very best with sophisticated AV systems.

The Amina Edge5 is a simpler product suitable for less complex systems and can handle 50W continuous power, 100W peak. This is ideal for high volume price sensitive applications such as MDU’s, commercial and lower cost residential properties.

The new Amina Edge damped structure therefore provides a wide frequency range, without the need for a plaster skim coat – that’s lot of LF as well as HF. Once installed the Amina Edge product can be finished with paint, fabric or lightweight wallpaper.
