Monitor Audio will introduce a new Platinum range of loudspeakers at CES 2016. The Platinum II range comprises bookshelf and floorstanding speakers, plus home cinema enclosures. Monitor Audio grandly describes the seven-strong line-up as “the most accurate and beautiful loudspeakers” it has ever made, “offering genuine audiophile performance with simply stunning design and materials specification.”

The range consist of the flagship PL500 II tower (£15,000 pair, pictured bottom); two further floor standing models, the PL300 II (£8,000 pair) and PL200 II (£6,300 pair); the PL100 II stand-mount monitor (£3,150 pair); matching centre-channel speakers in two sizes: the PLC350 II (£3,150, pictured above) and PLC150 II (£2,100), and a 1400W, twin 15-inch subwoofer: the PLW-215 (£3,500).

For the first time in a Monitor Audio speaker, the Platinum II features a new MPD (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) high frequency transducer, supported by an advanced RDT II bass and mid drivers. The transducer uses an extremely thin, low-mass pleated diaphragm with a surface area eight times larger than that of a traditional dome tweeter, able to operate at a uniform output to over 100 kHz.

RDTII is a composite ‘sandwich’ structure made from ultra-thin low mass skins, bonded to a honeycomb Nomex core material. Unlike the original RDT construction for Platinum I, which used two C-CAM skins, RDTII employs C-CAM for the front skin, while the rear skin is made from a woven carbon fibre material. Monitor Audio engineers discovered that the new approach reduces distortion by over 8dB above 300Hz, which makes RDTII the lowest distortion cone technology the brand has made. Other technology improvements include underhung, edge-wound  voice coils, an improved crossover design and speaker terminals precision milled from solid copper with Rhodium plated conductor parts.

For the finish, natural wood veneers in Santos Rosewood or Natural Ebony have been pair-matched, applied and hand-coated with eleven layers of clear gloss piano lacquer. Piano black gloss lacquer is an option. The front baffles are hand-upholstered in Inglestone leather supplied by Andrew Muirhead. Monitor Audio says Platinum II enclosure can take as many as 144 hours to complete. The range will begin shipping in February 2016.
