LG has finally confirmed a UK retail price and availability for its first OLED TV: the 55EM970V will sell for £10,000 with deliveries expected to begin in July. It will be exclusively available for pre-order from Harrods. This is (probably) the fourth launch announcement made by LG for the technology, but hopes seem high it might actually now appear. Interestingly, the pricing looks certain to put the set up against Sony's next wave of 4K LED products, due around the same time.

The 55-inch Full HD screen is a mere 4.5 millimetres thin and weighs less than 10kg. The panel is produced using LG's proprietary WRGB technology. Samsung so far has been unable to launch a rival OLED product. Brian Na, president of LG Electronics UK describes the set as a game-changer "which will forever alter the way we think about TVs. Since OLED TV was first unveiled, we've been working tirelessly to bring what we call 'the ultimate display' to market. Our 55-inch OLED TV has definitely been worth the wait."

The set will be Passive 3D ready and include all the usual Smart TV paraphernalia. En route to market it has picked up numerous accolades, including the Industrial Designers Society of America IDEA Award, European Display Achievement 2012-2013 Award from EISA and Korea's Good Design Award.

Craig west, head of Marketing for consumer electronics at LG UK, says that the ultra-thin screen "has already seen over 100 pre-orders in Korea, demonstrating the high desirability of this premium TV." He adds: "To continue to raise consumer awareness, we are also increasing Research & Development, and investment in OLED TV technology and marketing to solidify our position as an OLED leader." West predicts that the new screen tech will "be the fastest-growing segment in the TV business over the next two or three years."

So will OLED finally live up the the hype? Inside CI will be taking an in-depth look at the screen, as soon as samples become available.
