LG has revealed that it will unveil a 21:9 ratio 105-inch curved LCD TV at the upcoming International CES. The 105UB9 will be the first 21:9 ratio set from the brand, and its first curved 4K Ultra HD screen. Only Philips has attempted to popularise 21:9 ratio screens previously, but without commercial success. LG touted a 77-inch curved OLED panel at IFA 2013, but this is the brand's first bendy LCD. "As the model is previewed for the first time, there is no detailed announcement regarding either market availability timing for consumer sales or pricing," states the company.
The announcement also marks the start of the combatitive pre-show tit for tat between LG and its principal rival Samsung. Predicatbly Samsung has similarly promised to also show a 105-inch curved LCD UHD TV. Quite how practical any 21:9 ratio set is in the home remains to be seen. While the majority of movies are released in a 21:9 aspect ratio, TV production, both Full HD and UHD, is 16:9. LG proposes that the redundant space either side of a standard widescreen image by used for " viewing information."
The image resolution is 5120 x 2160 pixels, equating to 11 million pixels. The brand says that in order to realise the TV's curvature, new technology had to be developed in order to maintain structural integrity and deliver uniform colour and brightness. LG Display says it overcame the challenge of uneven backlighting by "refining its Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology to prevent colour leakage and to ensure a superior viewing experience from virtually any angle," he says.
Yong-kee Hwang, Senior Vice President and head of LG Display's TV Business Unit believes the development will help keep his group's "dominant position" in the display market. "With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers."
In-kyu Lee, VP and head of the Home Entertainment Company's TV division at LG Electronics, adds: "Claiming the world's first and the world's largest titles, LG's 105UB9 employs cutting-edge technology to provide a truly unique viewing experience. We will continue to drive the next generation TV market and demonstrate that with LG, it's all possible."
