LG has promised to ship its first 84-inch 84LM960V 4K Ultra HD TV into ten stores before Christmas, including John Lewis Sloane Square, Bentalls Kingston and Richer Sounds Southampton. The screen comes with a retail price of £22,500, slightly undercutting rival Sony's KD-84X9005.

"We're proud to be the first to offer UK consumers Ultra High Definition technology for their homes," proclaimed Stephen Gater, CE Consumer Marketing Director. "It wowed the audiences at IFA, and representing every advanced technology that we are proud to offer as a TV manufacturer, we are confident that it will capture the imagination of the UK public as they get to see it up close for the first time."

The set sports a Triple XD picture processing engine with proprietary Resolution Upscaler Plus technology, able to upscale content to 4K, plus a 2.2 Speaker System, consisting of two 10W speakers and two 15W woofers. Other niceties include a  3D Sound Zooming feature which analyses on-screen objects to generate sound according to their location and movement.

It also has a full compliment of LG Smart functionality, including BBC iPlayer, LOVEFiLM, Acetrax, Netflix, Blinkbox and Knowhow movies. Standard accoutrements such as LG's wand-like Magic Remote Control and Passive 3D glasses are included. The Freeview HD set also functions as a media player for local USB content and networked files stored on a NAS. Wi-Fi is built-in.

To generate some 4K excitement, the brand is taking the Ultra HD screen (along with the rest of its range) out on the road. After making a splash at the Gadget Show Live in London, it'll visit The Bullring, Birmingham (Dec 7 -9), Westfield Stratford (Dec 13 -15) and The Trafford Centre, Manchester (Dec 21-24).

The arrival of 4K in the UK before Christmas comes as a stark contrast to the non-appearance of OLED, which LG has been championing for several years.
