Epson is gearing up for its largest ISE presence yet, says Neil Colquhoun, business director for Epson’s European visual instruments division. The news was revealed to Inside CI at a high level corporate briefing this week in London. Colquhoun (pictured above) also confirmed that a native home theatre 4K projector was in development. Of the brand’s recent projector launches, he added “The market has become quite polarised. You’ve got entry level 1080p products and high-end EH-LS10000 type products. Most of our news at the moment is on the lower end. We’ve just released the £550 EB-UO4 (pictured below) which is designed to take on the BenQ TH681. What we’re seeing is a big demarcation line around €999 euros, above which there is a bit of gap.”
Currently Epson’s consumer flagship is the laser light EH-LS1000. “It’s pseudo 4K - we didn’t want to wait until we had a 4K product,” says Colquhoun. “It’s been a phenomenal success. It’s definitely the future of projection. The absolute black is phenomenal.”
So will we see a native 4K LCD projector from Epson? According to Colquhoun, it’s coming but there’s no time frame. “You will see a native 4K projector from us. But as I always say, we need to make sure it’s best to market, not first to market. There’s still a long way to go until we get 4K content - and we need these kind of breakthroughs to drive the technology.”
