Epson hopes to drive the take-up of 3D projectors with a 3D glasses giveaway. The promotion centres on two models, the high-end EH-TW9000 and EH-TW6000W with wireless HDMI transmitter. Both use Active Shutter 3D technology, which delivers Full HD 3D but requires shuttering glasses which are intrinsically more expensive than the disposable bins used for passive polarisation, the technology increasingly favoured by flatpanel makers.

The EH-TW6000W, typically priced at £1650, is currently one the more affordable stereoscopic 1080p home cinema projectors around, offering a brightness of 2,200 lumens and a contrast ratio of 40,000:1. The top of the range £2,650 EH-TW9000 is brighter at 2,400 lumens and boasts a contrast ratio up to 200,000:1. Both feature luminance enhancement technology which promises a brighter 3D viewing experience. Filtering glasses traditionally reduce the brightness of 3D content. However, by doubling the refresh rate from 240Hz to 480Hz, the blackout period between left and right eye images is dramatically reduced, which the brand says produces brighter 3D images that are more comfortable to watch.

The promotion runs from now until the 28th September 2012. Buyers of the EH-TW6000W during this period will receive one additional pair of glasses, while those that opt for the EH-TW9000 will walk away with two additional pairs of spex, valued at £69 apiece.

Category manager Graeme Davidson says: "We like to think we understand who our customers are, what they need and what they expect." He predicts that demand for 3D is only likely to grow now that there is a strong commitment from content providers for 3D material. "With the projection that 27 per cent of households will be 3D capable by 2015 and over 40 3D video game titles released, now is the time for to give viewers the ability to watch 3D content on the big screen," he says.
