New Odeon Club cinemas give a taste of CI

In terms of budget, it's more than most of us get to play with, but the £3m renovation of one of London's oldest cinemas, the Odeon Swiss Cottage, is a sparkling example of home the latest tech can transform the movie-going experience. Strange to think that this classic Art Deco cinema, which first opened its doors in 1937, now boasts arguably the best IMAX screen in London (smaller but more rewarding than the BFI IMAX). However, it's the Odeon's new Club cinemas, not the IMAX, which are of interest here.

There are two Clubs in the Swiss Cottage complex. In terms of design, they straddle the line beautifully between upscale home theatre and commercial cinema. Room dimensions are large but not overly so, and bespoke leather chairs separated by tables for food and drink help create an intimate viewing environment. Images come courtesy of a DLP digital cinema projector.

Beverages and grub can be taken in to the theatre from the Odeon's new Ambar. The company had previously squeezed a shoebox cinema into this space, but that's been scrapped to make way for this new watering hole. The aesthetics are great, sympathetically using elements of the original building's art deco structure. Incidentally, anyone can use this bar - you don't need to buy a movie ticket.

These are the only Club cinemas in the Odeon chain, and I'm told they're a bit of an experiment. If they prove successful they'll be rolled out with other refurbishment projects. I can't help feeling that there's a strong link here between what Odeon has done in the commercial sector and what CI has always tried to embrace.

Let's hope that if patrons get a taste for this kind of cinema experience, they'll hanker for their very own all the more.
